We actually have two printers attached to our serials checkin computer.
One is loaded with plain (although tractor fed) paper and the other is
loaded with tractor fed labels.  We have the printers connected to a
switch box so that we can identify which printer we want data to go
to.

Both printers are old:  IBM Proprinter XL24 and IBM Quietwriter (this one
was letter-quality).  Both are pretty reliable for their specific uses.

I haven't ever tried to print labels using a non-tractor printer, but we
do print other types of labels using sheets on our laserjet, so I guess
you can.  Hope this helps.
