We use a variation of this - our slanted shelf sits above the horizontal
shelf so that the horizontal shelf (and the back issues) are visible
without lifting the shelf.  Lifting the slanted shelf (which is possible)
results too often in the shelf becoming "unhooked" from the vertical
support.  Because of our spacing we can only put 4-6 back issues on the
horizontal shelf.  I do like the looks of our shelving and it is user
friendly.
