HEAD, CATALOGING DEPARTMENT

The University of Northern Iowa seeks a creative, experienced, and
forward-thinking librarian to lead a department with a long tradition of
providing high quality cataloging and related bibliographic control
services.  This position is vacant due to internal promotion of the
incumbent.  The department is composed of 3 library faculty, 8 FTE
staff,
and approximately 10 students.

The department head will provide leadership in the development of
policies
and procedures relating to cataloging and related bibliographic control
functions; will oversee the training and scheduling of departmental
personnel; will work closely with the library administration and other
department heads to plan, implement, and coordinate library programs and
policies; and will be responsible for evaluation of the services
provided by
the department.  This is a twelve-month faculty position.  Completion of
a
second master's degree or doctorate by the sixth year of employment and
a
record of professional involvement and scholarly activity are required
for
tenure.

Required:  ALA-accredited MLS or international equivalent, at least five
years' post-MLS professional cataloging experience in an academic or
research library; at least two years management and/or supervisory
experience; extensive knowledge of AACR2, MARC, LC classification, and
LCSH;
experience with an integrated online library system and with a
bibliographic
utility; demonstrated knowledge of all aspects of cataloging practice
and
theory; well-developed organizational, supervisory, leadership, and
communication skills.  Preferred: Experience with Innovative Interfaces,
Inc. automated system; experience cataloging electronic resources;
knowledge
of trends in access to digital information; knowledge of emerging
metadata
standards; second graduate degree (required for tenure).

Anticipated Start Date: January 1, 2000 or earlier.  Salary at
appointment:
$ 45,000.  Comprehensive benefits including TIAA/CREF.  Rank
commensurate
with credentials and experience.  Full-time, tenure-track position.

Innovative Interfaces Integrated Online Library System since 1989. Since
1996, Rod Library has been a member of the technology-based Cedar Valley
Library Consortium, sharing its Innovative system with consortium
members.
