 POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT
 PERIODICALS SERVICES LIBRARIAN

The University of Texas-Pan American (UTPA)

Responsibilities: include supervision and management of the day-to-day
operations of periodicals services.  Provides services to patrons and
supervises three to four fulltime support staff members. Coordinates
periodicals
public services activities with periodicals technical services personnel to
promote effective working relationships.  Communicates with the
Acquistions/Periodicals Librarian regarding receipt, claiming, binding, and
repair of periodicals and microforms. Communicates with Collection
Development Librarian regarding gaps in periodicals and provides
statistical information. Possible provision of services for media
collection.  (This is primarily a Public Services, not a Technical
Services, position.)

Requirements: MLS degree from an ALA accredited institution; two or more
years of work at periodicals or reference in an automated academic library;
knowledge of periodicals publishing industry; knowledge of OPAC and OCLC;
ability to interact and communicate well with the public; and ability to
work a flexible schedule which includes some evening and weekend
responsibilities.

Preferred: knowledge of DRA; supervisory experience; and a second master's
degree.

Position: permanent non-tenured administrative staff position available
September 1, 1999.  Position open until filled.  Salary is $35,000 per
annum.
