   LOCATION: Christopher Newport University
   Newport news, Virginia

   DESCRIPTION: Christopher Newport University, a state institution of
   5,000 students located in Virginia's Tidewater area, invites
   applications for an entry-level librarian position. Newport News is on
   the James River, and is one of a cluster of cities surrounding the
   mouth of the Chesapeake Bay, including Norfolk, Virginia Beach,
   Hampton, and Portsmouth. It is an hour's drive from the ocean, beaches,
   and Richmond, the state's capital. The Captain John Smith Library is an
   active member of the Virtual Library of Virginia, a consortium of
   academic libraries providing access to a growing collection of
   bibliographic and full-text databases. Smith Library's web page is

   Librarians at Christopher Newport University have faculty rank and
   status, and must meet University requirements for tenure and
   promotion, including research, publication, teaching, and service.
   Librarians teach a one-credit course on Research Skills or Internet
   Resources. An excellent benefits package is available.

   SALARY RANGE: The salary range for this entry-level position is
   $27,000-$30,000.

   Reporting to the Catalog Librarian, the Assistant Catalog/Reference
   Librarian will perform original and complex copy cataloging of library
   materials; participate in planning, developing and implementing
   cataloging policies and procedures; serve as a resource person for
   cataloging questions and problems; provide reference desk service
   about 15 hours per week, including one evening per week and
   approximately three weekends per semester; provide bibliographic
   instruction to students, faculty and staff; participate in the local
   planning and implementation of the Virtual Library of Virginia project;
   serve as a library liaison to selected academic departments; and
   perform other duties as assigned. The selected candidate will be
   responsible for the supervision of departmental classified staff and
   student assistants in the absence of the Catalog Librarian.

   In order for candidates to be considered, the cover letter and/or
   resume must address all of the following

   REQUIRED qualifications: an ALA-accredited Master's degree in
   Library Science; demonstrated knowledge of reference materials;
   demonstrated knowledge of cataloging procedures and resources
   including AACR2R, Library of Congress Subject Headings, the
   Library of Congress Classification System, and MARC format;
   experience and familiarity with a bibliographic utility (preferably
   OCLC); excellent written and oral communication skills; and excellent
   interpersonal skills.

   PREFERRED qualifications include: a second Master's degree;
   reference experience in a college or university library; experience
   with electronic reference sources; teaching experience including
   library instruction classes; experience cataloging monographs, serials
   and multimedia; reading knowledge of at least one foreign language;
   experience using automated library systems; experience with personal
   computers, Windows 95 and word processing programs; and
   supervisory experience.
