Vacancy Announcement: University of Florida,  George A. Smathers Libraries,
Gainesville, Florida

Position Title:         Serial Cataloger (Instructor/Assistant Librarian)
Salary:                   $ 30,000/32,000 minimum respectively
Department:            Resource Services
Responsible to:       Head, Serials Unit, Acquisitions Section

Job Summary:
This position is responsible for general cataloging in all subjects and in
all formats that come into the Serials Unit. Provides original and
upgrades/enhances copy cataloging using AACR2 and LC classification and
subject headings according to cataloging policies, BIBCO and CONSER
guidelines; creates and maintains holdings records according to UF
implementation of MFHL; upgrades, enhances and authenticates existing
catalog records to CONSER & BIBCO standards; and establishes authoritative
forms of names using NACO standards. Training and supervision of the
cataloging activities in the Serials Unit.

Responsibilities:

1. Catalogs materials in all subjects and formats. Serves as the CONSER
coordinator.  Contributes to CONSER,NACO,SACO and BIBCO programs as
appropriate.  Keeps current with cataloging incoming materials in all
formats.

2. Serves as the Serials Unit coordinator, trainer and representative for
all cataloging activities. Serves as a resource person for Unit staff in all
cataloging and name authority matters. Ensures quality control of the
cataloging and authority work done by Unit staff.

3. Assists in management of the Serials Unit by establishing policies and
procedures that coordinate the Unit's cataloging with national standards and
local policy and procedures. Supervises the cataloging functions in the Unit
by training staff, solving complex cataloging problems, and answering
questions. Coordinates serials cataloging polices and NACO participation
with Contributed Cataloging Section of Resource Services.

4.Participates in staffing the Humanities and Social Sciences Periodicals
Room information desk

5. Contributes to the development of departmental goals and library goals,
polices, procedures and priorities by working with a variety of groups and
various assignments and by drafting suggestions or responses to in-process
documents.

6. Participates in Library-wide systems liaison groups, resolving problems
or handling assignments as needed. Assist in analyzing computer related
aspects of unit work.

7. Develops and maintains knowledge base of current events, developments,
trend and issues related to cataloging in all formats.

Qualifications: MLS or Bachelors with five years experience cataloging
serials and/or serial maintenance. Understanding and proficient in emerging
technologies, ability to work in team environment, oral and written skills,
experience with LC classification and subject headings, MARC formats
(including holdings) and an online cataloging system OR serials maintenance
exp. with automated check-in system, working knowledge of one or more
foreign languages.
