RARE SERIALS CATALOGING WORKSHOP

A workshop sponsored by the California Library Association
Access, Collections, and Technical Services Section (CLA ACTSS).
Developed from a shorter workshop presented at the ALA ACRL
Rare Books and Manuscripts Section Preconference held in
Montreal in June, 1999.

This full-day workshop will provide participants with experience
in the problems and techniques of cataloging rare serials through
presentations, informative handouts, and hands-on exercises.
Participants are encouraged to bring specific cataloging problems.
Attendance will be limited to 25 participants.

Aimed particularly at rare books catalogers without serials cataloging
experience and serials catalogers who have responsibility for cataloging
rare materials. A working knowledge of DCRB (Descriptive Cataloging of
Rare Books) is desirable, but not essential. All participants must be
familiar with USMARC.

Jane Gillis, Catalog Librarian for Rare Books, Yale University

DATE/LOCATION: Friday, November 12, 1999 at Palm Springs Convention
    Center, Palm Springs, California. Check in by 8:30 AM. Workshop
    begins promptly at 9 AM and ends at 4 PM, with morning and
    afternoon breaks.

COST: $100 for CLA members
      $135 for non-members
      Fee includes beverage breaks and handouts. Lunch is on your own.

REGISTRATION PROCESS:

The workshop is offered as a preconference institute of the California
Library Association Annual Conference. You do not have to register for
the conference in order to attend an institute, and you will be eligible
for conference rates at the conference hotels (through Nov. 16).

Advance registration, with a separate registration fee, is required for
all institutes. Seating is limited and the final deadline for
registration is October 31. You will receive a confirmation packet with
the location of the registration desk two to three weeks prior to the
workshop. On November 12 you must check in at the desk at least 30
minutes prior to the workshop start time.
