Right!

24Dt's for the first jump plus 12 for the second & there's still 4 left over.

In my example I was thinking of an ex-scout 'borrowing' the use of the j-tanks from a local Scout Base with the caveat that he would leave them behind for recovery.

It also occurs to me that keeping the tanks would allow the Scout to to effectively possess J3 capability.
Could come handy on certain survey missions.

Would it be possible for a Scout to carry & retain enough external tankage to allow J2+2?
With 20dT's internal & 40 external, a Scout could use 28dT's for each J2 with four left over, I believe.

p.s. wouldn't a Model/1bis also work just fine for either of our examples?

Evening from the Pacific Northwest Phil,

With the tanks retained the scout courier could make an initial jump of 2 followed by a second J1 jump using a Mode/2 computer.

I think I could find a use for a Scout with 20dT's internal plus 20dT's in drop tanks.

That would provide an initial J2 (dropping tanks) & then another J2 w/o having to refuel thus making a total of 4 parsecs possible even if a 'void jump' occurs.

As far as the cargo goes, I think it would be quite possible & probably even routine to use any 'extra' staterooms to store cargo thus giving a possible total of 6dT's if travelling solo or five if travelling with a partner.

Hello again,

Update 2:

I'm rewriting my document showing the hulls at TL 9-10 > J1, TL 11 > J2, TL 12 > J3, TL 13 > J4, and TL 14 > J5 with and without drop tanks. I'll let you know when I've finished so that anyone who would like a copy I send them a copy.

CT Book 2 Starships 1977/1981: The six standard starships hull sizes are 100, 200, 400, 600, 800, and 1,000 tons each hull has a space requirement split between the Main Compartment and the Engineering Section. Standard hulls Engineering Section can only house the power plant, jump drive, and maneuver drive. The Drive Potential Table lists the commonly found custom hull sizes which are 100, 200, 400,600, 800, 1,000, 2,000, 3,000, 4,000, and 5,000 tons.

A. Standard hull Sizes capable of making greater than J1 at TL 9-10 with and without drop tanks. The available computer models are: TL 5 Model/1, TL 6 Model/1bis, TL 7 Model/2, TL 8 Model/2bis, TL 9 Model/3, and TL 10 Model/4.

1. Standard 100-ton: Main Compartment: 85 tons and Engineering Section: 15 tons:

Standard Scout/Courier (Type S) without drop tanks: TL 9 Jump-2 Type-A drive with 20 tons of internal fuel tankage, TL7 Maneuver-2 Type-B, and TL 7 Power Plant-2 Type-A with 20 tons of internal fuel tankage, Bridge, TL 6 model/1bis computer, 4 staterooms, 1 hardpoint with fire control, 1 double turret without weapons, 1 air/raft, and a cargo capacity of 3. Swapping out the Model/1 bis for a TL 7 Model/2 or TL 8 Model/2bis decreases the cargo capacity to 2 tons, a TL 9 Model/3 drops the cargo capacity to 1 ton, and installation of a TL 10 Model/4 results in the scout having no cargo capacity. Removing a combination of up to three staterooms, the air/raft, and/or the fire control system will regain cargo capacity.

Standard Scout/Courier (Type S) with 10 tons of jump fuel in drop tanks: TL 9 Jump-2 Type-A drive with 10 tons of internal fuel tankage plus 10 tons of fuel in drop tanks. Using the internal 10 tons of jump fuel tankage the scout/courier is capable of J1. Using the internal jump fuel tankage and retaining the 10 tons of fuel in the drop tank(s) the scout/courier is capable of J1 and by jettisoning the drop tanks before jump the hull can make J2. TL7 Maneuver-2 Type-B, and TL 7 Power Plant-2 Type-A with 20 tons of fuel, Bridge, TL 6 Model/1bis computer, 4 staterooms, 1 hardpoint with fire control, 1 double turret without weapons, 1 air/raft, and a cargo capacity of 13. Upgrading the Model/1 bis for a TL 7 Model/2 or TL 8 Model/2bis decreases the cargo capacity to 12 tons, a TL 9 Model/3 drops the cargo capacity to 11 tons, and installation of a TL 10 Model/4 leaves a cargo capacity of 10 tons. Removing a combination of up to three staterooms, the air/raft, and/or the fire control system will regain cargo capacity.

Standard Scout/Courier (Type S) with 20 tons of jump fuel in drop tanks: TL 9 Jump-2 Type-A drive with 20 tons of fuel in drop tanks is capable of J1 and by jettisoning the drop tanks before jump the hull can make one J2.This scout/courier variant is not capable of any further interstellar flight until the drop tanks are replaced. TL7 Maneuver-2 Type-B, and TL 7 Power Plant-2 Type-A with 20 tons of fuel, Bridge, TL 6 Model/1bis computer, 4 staterooms, 1 hardpoint with fire control, 1 double turret without weapons, 1 air/raft, and a cargo capacity of 23 tons. Upgrading the Model/1 bis for a TL 7 Model/2 or TL 8 Model/2bis decreases the cargo capacity to 22 tons, a TL 9 Model/3 drops the cargo capacity to 21 tons, and installation of a TL 10 Model/4 leaves a cargo capacity of 20 tons. Removing a combination of up to three staterooms, the air/raft, and/or the fire control system will regain cargo capacity.

The above is my best effort at calculating the scout/courier using the available information. A side note is that I think that the crew calculations for the hulls with stewards  are based on the text from CT LBB 2 1977. For example the Free Trader (Type A) reserves six of the ten staterooms for high and middle passengers. Based on the probability that at least one high passage will be carried one steward is required.
