Depending on your computer system, have a peak at the Q10 editor for writers.
It's a bit odd - totally blank screen except for various word counts - because it wants you to focus on the story you are trying to get out (the content) rather than all the other distractions. It runs full screen. I find it a great place to compose - formatting later.
F1 gets you help.
The word counts are *configurable* in that you can specify how big a 'word' is in your use. (I set mine to 5 characters)

Pasting into Notepad

ah, good thought, I should try that.

and saving will get you a KB count (file size in
Windows Explorer/File Explorer), but in general, figure that 1KB of plain
(raw/unformatted) text is about 100-200 words.

100-200 words?!  Nice and vague.

OK, so my 10,000 words (a tiny bit over actually) should easily come in under the limit (of 125k) at the lower end of that range but will be well over at the top end.  I should stop using such long words... ;-)  Or weighty metaphors.

Hang on, before I click send, I could try it.  Cutting and pasting TTA XXIV from TML:
Notepad as .txt - 60k - but I've lost all italics and the small amount of bold

So let's try from Word as .rtf - 104k.

So, still under the limit.  Which suggests this won't help me much!
As I say, I won't sweat it.  If Bruce is happy to vet them, it's not like they are *that* time dependent they have to be posted *immediately*.  Who's still half way through the last one? :-)
