Hello all,

It has been a saying in my family for as long as I can remember. Members of my family are into genealogy and have traced the family to Ireland, Scotland, and other English locales. Then there is some German and Dutch.

My dad, born in Canada, used it, as did his dad, born in Dunfermline, Scotland in 1898. I may have heard my cousin Alan, born in Motherwell, Scotland use it too. It may have originated in Guernsey but I believe is used more broadly in Scotland. I seem to recall a song lyric featuring it.

That's interesting, you are only the second example of someone using that expression I have ever heard!

My wife's family use an almost identical version and tell me it's an old Guernsey saying.

Cheers,
Jim
