Four reasons: in Traveller, having a space yacht, even a small one like the 200dt models we’ve seen through the years, is roughly equivalent to having a private jet today , or a small schooner during the 1700’s - it’s how you get to business meetings outside your local area, plus it’s your secure mail carrier. Yes, regular liners and xboats are used by basically everyone; but taking first class to Japan after sending an letter in the post is a far different sort of impression than flying over in your private jet and having your lackey personally deliver a handwritten letter. From the outside, it may seem like a plaything (and many dilettantes with good family relations will use them as such), but the luxury and existence of the craft is a different story - one that sends the subtext of “I am a person of wealth and substance, deal with me as such”.
