Sail power is also free. Engines cost in both maintenance and fuel. When you’re scraping by very close to the margins, this can make the difference. As we head towards peak oil and beyond, this will become increasingly important. The need for improved fuel economy, for example has been the biggest driving force in commercial aviation development for decades now.
