Dear Subscriber,
I was feeling quite proud of myself for getting this issue done within the first week of April. I'm on top of things, I told myself! And then... I completely forgot to send out the newsletter. So, not so much on top of things as I'd like to believe. April has been doing its best to convince us that it's really February again, with sub-freezing temperatures and the threat (thankfully not delivered) of snow. But spring and summer are surely around the corner! (As is the next issue, of course!)
This issue, and the January and February issues, are included in our latest Victorian Times Quarterly print edition, which is now available - see below for details.
As always, this issue is available not only by direct download but through DropBox. If you're already a DropBox customer, accessing the issue will be a cinch. If you're not, when you click the link I'll provide below, you'll be invited to sign up for their free service.
The current issue of Victorian Times will remain in DropBox until the next issue is released; then it will be removed, but will continue to be available through the regular web-link. Please let me know if you have any problems downloading from either source!
Here's what we have in the April issue:
- "Bobby" on His Beat (Windsor Magazine, 1897) A night in the life of the London "bobby" - and the hazards of trying to research an article on same!
- The Social Duty of Women: The Afternoon Call (CFM, 1894) Social life in the days before Facebook...
- Savoury Dishes: How to Improve Them (CFM, 1884) Some interesting ideas on how to make your savoury dishes look as delightful as they taste.
- Model Menu for April (GOP, 1893) What to offer for this month's dinner party.
- Out-Door Games From Over the Sea: Lazy Mary (GOP, 1892) A six-part series that looks at children's outdoor games from around the world, including some marvelous folklore about counting rhymes and other verses! (Warning: Victorian children's rhymes, especially from America, were not always politically correct!)
- Art Needlework (GOP, 1888) Beautiful embroidery patterns that work just as well today as they did more than 100 years ago.
- Mr. Smith in His New Home (CFM, 1886) Fourth in a series of tales of the adventures of Mr. Smith, a charming fellow generously described as a "dachshund." Mr. Smith supervises a move to Essex... (Plus we're ending the series of tales about Mr. Smith with the charming poem that appeared in one of our first issues!)
- April Lore (ILA, 1846)Country lore, customs and feast days.
- Fiction: Madame's Little Plot (CFM, 1878) Is Madame the French governess quite what she seems?
