Charles,

Thanks. I managed to get it again this morning in clearer though still
very bright skies. I have just about detected the faint ion tail to the
west which has been detected by others. The comet certainly looks quite
active and it will be interesting, though challenging, to follow as it
approaches perihelion.

I hope that your tropical storm doesn't cause too much damage and that
you do get to make some visual observations of this comet. It is not
likely to be seen by many people.

Nick.

> Very well done, Nick. I will never be able to image the comet because I can't safely get below 20 degrees. I do hope to see it visually at some point with binoculars, although it is not in the best direction as far as light pollution is concerned. I hope to time the brightness increase with the elevation so I can get it in my 20x80 B.
> But that won't be for a few days. Right now, we have Hurricane Hilary moving up off the west coast of Mexico. It is predicted to be a tropical storm by the time it hits Southern California. The main impact is rain. At my place we are expecting 7.5 cm of precipitation over the next two days. [We normally get Zero rain in August.] In the deserts, like Death Valley, and other areas to my east and north, they are expecting 12.5 cm or more rain. For the deserts that is a year's worth of precipitation.
> The last time we got a tropical storm in Southern California was something like 80 years ago. So, this is unusual. Typically, the cold California Current kills hurricanes so the most we get are a few showers in the mountains, not amounting to much, and some clouds.
