Changes to Online Access Effective October 1, 2001
For The New England Journal of Medicine Online

August 2001

Dear Administrator:

As you may be aware, The New England Journal of Medicine recently moved its
Internet service, NEJM Online (www.nejm.org), to a new platform at HighWire
Press.

Now that NEJM Online is fully established at HighWire, we are changing our
institutional subscriber service as well as adding reporting functions.
Please read this notice of important changes to your online access method.

----------------------------------------

YOUR CURRENT ACCESS:

Users at your institution now access NEJM Online by means of a single
username and password (single concurrent user) that your institution
controls. A second username and password has also been granted to you as
account administrator.

NEW ACCESS METHOD FOR USERS AFTER October 1, 2001:

After October 1, online access for users at institutions subscribing to NEJM
in print will be controlled by IP address.

Institutional On-Site Workstation Access - at no extra cost.

For each NEJM institutional print subscription held by your institution, you
may register up to five (5) specific on-site workstations for IP-based
access at no additional cost.

----------------------------------------

PLEASE NOTE THAT AFTER OCTOBER 1, YOUR CURRENT USERNAME AND PASSWORD WILL NO
LONGER WORK.

When you are ready to begin, please go to the area on our website,
identified below and follow the instructions:

1. You will be asked to enter your current administrative username/password,
to establish your identity on the site
2. You will then be asked to choose a new password as administrator.
3. Please note that you may use your administrative username and new
password to review full text at NEJM Online and perform account maintenance
functions. However, general posting of this username/password for access by
users within your institution is not permitted or recommended, as it
provides access to core maintenance and reporting functions.
4. You will be asked to indicate your acceptance of the Agreement for
Institutional On-Site Workstation Access.
5. You may enter up to five specific on-site IP addresses. No wildcards (*),
IP ranges, or proxy servers are permitted.
6. Note: if your institution holds multiple print subscriptions to NEJM, you
may enter up to five (5) IP addresses per subscription. Each subscription,
along with its 5 unique IP addresses, must be registered separately.

-----------------------------------------

CUT OFF DATE FOR TRANSITION IS OCTOBER 1, 2001:

The final date for activation of your workstations is October 1, 2001.
Please act now to establish your new administrative password and identify
the IP addresses you wish to activate.

QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS:

If you have comments regarding the above information, you may reply to this
email, or respond directly to: licensing@nejm.org. Please put the phrase

your institution as well as your current e-mail address as administrator.

We thank you for your patience and cooperation during this transition
