PRINCIPAL CATALOGER
Full-time, 12 month appointment
Reports to Director of the Library
Position available Fall 2002

Pelletier Library of Allegheny College invites applications for the
position of principal cataloger.  Responsibilities:  catalogs materials in
all formats and some foreign languages, including some original cataloging,
using AACR2R, Dewey Decimal Classification, and LC Subject
Headings.  Performs authority control on a database of over 400,000
bibliographic and authority records.  Updates cataloging and union listing
of over 4,000 periodicals records (both print and electronic).  Maintains
the integrity of the online catalog and physical collections.  Supervises
one full-time assistant and four students.

Qualifications:  Required:  ALA-accredited MLS or equivalent; substantial
relevant post-MLS experience.  Preferred:  experience with OCLC; Innovative
Interfaces, Inc.'s systems; Dewey classification; supervisory experience;
experience with cataloging serials; authority control.  Other
requirements:  strong organization and communication skills; ability to
work under pressure, meet deadlines, solve problems, exercise good
judgment.  Ability to work in a team environment.  Familiarity with
emerging trends and issues in cataloging.

Salary competitive and dependent on experience and
