standing orders: direct or with vendors Bob Schatz, Franklin Book Co. 13 Jan 2003 16:51 UTC

With so many libraries re-considering the placement of subscriptions
directly with publishers as a result of recent events, I'm interested in
whether this includes standing orders. We know that some libraries already
place standing orders direct with publishers, others place them with book
vendors, and yet others have them melded in with their subscriptions. In
the latter case, if you are investigating ordering subscriptions direct,
does that include standing orders as well?

As a bookseller, I won't pretend that my question is completely innocent,
but I think the topic is worth some discussion, since subscriptions and
standing orders are not identical in their handling within libraries or
vendor operations.
