If I remember correctly, "International Journal of Comparative
Sociology" (and a few other titles) had been published by Brill.
These titles are now being published by deSitter, and are continuing.
Brill has replaced "International Journal of Comparative Sociology"
with "Comparative Sociology", etc. The titles are independent of
each other.

Ebsco told us that this is one where the editor (who owned the rights to
the title) moved from Brill
to DeSitter publications. Brill decided to continuing publishing a title
with the name Comparative
Sociology. So from Brill's perspective it is a title change, but in
reality they are two separate titles
with a publisher change.

Tom, this was a case where someone owned the rights to the title and chose
to move the journal away from the commercial publisher. Said publisher
decided to keep publishing a competing journal. (For those of you with
long memories remember the Bulletin of Hispanic Studies--Glasgow and
Liverpool editions).

So the commercial publisher published IJCS thru 2002, then started a new
journal, Comparative Sociology. As far as we know IJCS is still published
(but by someone else).

As a subscriber you should have received many missives about this
situation, I know we did.

Several other journals were affected by this situation. Journal of Asian
and African Studies/African and Asian Studies is another one we subscribe
to.

If you need more explanation, give me a call. I'm responding to the list
in case anyone else has a question. This is the quick and dirty version of
events.

Tom,

This isn't a *complete* change of title: the indicators for the 785 field
you noted in the record for IJCS are 01, meaning that Comparative Sociology
continued *in part* the earlier title (IJCS), which itself is still being
published. So, yes, in a sense, there was a period when the two were being
published "simultaneously with different titles and volumes"... and still
are. What difference there is in content to "justify" the new "spin-off"
title, isn't made clear in the OCLC master records: perhaps there was some
announcement from the publisher in the first "sample" issue of Comparative
Sociology (v.1, no. 1 (2002)).

Hope this helps.
Gerald.

Dear Mr. Evans,
The indicators on the records tell the story; Comparative
sociology has 780 07 meaning "separated from". The IJCS record has 785
01 Comparative sociology, meaning "continued in part by". Therefore,
IJCS did not cease and that is why you are still receiving it as that
title.
The field indicators are list in OCLC Bibliographic Formats and
MARC 21 Bibliographic Formats.
                                                              Good

Notice the second indicators in fields 780 and 785. Apparently the second
title split off from the first title, but the first title is still
continues.
