Assistant Professor/Head of Cataloging

  Assistant Professor/Head of Cataloging, University Libraries, Murray State University.  Full-time, tenure track position to begin August 1, 2007.

  Qualifications:  ALA-accredited master’s degree with demonstrated management and supervisory experience.  Minimum 2 years original cataloging experience; experience with LC classification, LCRI, LCSH, MARC formats, and AACR2; knowledge of OCLC Connexion.  Strong commitment to, and knowledge of, current trends and issues in cataloging services management.  Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with other library staff and professionals in a complex academic library environment. Strong organizational, analytical, oral, and written communication skills.

  Preferred:  A minimum of 3 years original cataloging experience.  Demonstrated experience in analyzing workflow and operations.  Demonstrated experience with Endeavor Voyager or a similar integrated library system.

  Responsibilities:  Provide creative leadership and overall management, direction and oversight for all cataloging operations, which includes authority control, database maintenance, electronic resources management, and metadata creation for digitization projects.  Develop and implement all policies and systems in the cataloging area of the library.  Important functions in this area include: analysis of the internal procedures by which activities are or should be carried out; creation and implementation of more effective policies and systems; and production of manuals and documents for implementation and training.  Work in conjunction with the Acquisitions Librarian to provide access to electronic resources and to newly purchased and donated research materials.  Maintain an awareness of current library issues and trends involving cataloging; read professional literature and attend workshops.  Identify and resolve bibliographic and holdings problems for monographs and
 non-serial formats; provide original cataloging as needed.  Serve on library and campus committees; pursue an active and ongoing program of professional development, research, and service appropriate for his/her rank at the university.  Directly manages one librarian (a Serials Cataloger) and two or three support staff.
