Re: Serials Solutions MARC Service and OCLC Holdings Pamela Contakos 06 Mar 2008 16:45 UTC
We have had a huge increase in the number of ILL requests that we receive for our electronic journals since we added the holdings to SS. I have excluded the free resources from our holdings profile since they seem to cause too much trouble for our ILL person. Another problem we have encountered is that for our aggregator databases many of the titles have an embargo of a year on them and we get a lot of requests for articles that fall within that embargo which we have to pass on. I wish that the OCLC service allowed for holdings level information (years covered) so that this problem didn't crop up as often. Our ILL person usually avoids using the electronic records in borrowing for this reason. I don't have any data, but my impression is that it has increased the number of ILL requests we get, since holdings for our online journals (which are most of our subscriptions now) are listed. In the Serials Solutions Client Center, we select a lot of free resources in addition to subscribed resources. Sometimes, since Serials Solutions doesn't get updates from publishers regarding changes in accessibility, URLs and other data for free resources gets out of date (e.g. the journal is no longer free, or the latest issue isn't, etc.) I find that our ILL lending staff contacts me frequently with problems they have getting articles from these free journals. I've had to give them the rule of thumb that if it says that the journal is from a free resource, and they can't get in, they should let me know, but they should also pass the ILL request on, since it is not something we can quickly or easily resolve...
