ABOUT THE COMMERCIAL DIGEST

SERIALST Commercial Digest pilot project: Since June 2008, the SERIALST
moderators have been experimenting with compiling and distributing a
Commercial Digest once a week, on Friday afternoons, with messages
containing informational content from commercial bodies (i.e.,
publishers, vendors, agents, etc.). The moderators review submitted
messages for informational content that may interest our subscribers. We
reserve the right to reject messages that are purely for advertising or
product/service solicitation, with little or no informational content
beyond the solicitation, as well as other content that are not within
the scope and purpose guidelines of SERIALST
(see: http://www.uvm.edu/~bmaclenn/serialst.html)

If you have thoughts or feedback about the Commercial digest, or other
aspects of SERIALST, please let us hear from you. Contact information

PRESS RELEASE

Springer survey uncovers additional facts on eBooks use

New York/Heidelberg, 24 September 2008

A survey conducted by Science+Business Media (www.springer.com), the
world's largest science, technology and medical book publisher, in
conjunction with five leading academic institutions, highlights
prominent research and academic usage of eBooks. The survey was
conducted to better understand the adoption of eBooks, the use of
eBooks, and user perception of eBook advantages and disadvantages.

The new survey revealed that, despite the recent emergence of eBooks,
most users were already aware of their existence and had used them at
least once, whether through libraries or other sources. The study also
found that most users access eBooks for research and study purposes and
that the types of eBooks frequently used were reference works and textbooks.

The survey also focused on some of the perceived advantages of eBooks,
citing the ability to gain 24/7 access for multiple users, convenient
full-text searchability, and easy access to information. However,
difficulty of reading books from a screen and preference for traditional
print books were cited as the primary disadvantages.

Participating university libraries included: University of Illinois at
Urbana-Champaign; University of Turku, Finland; Centre for Mathematics
and Computer Science (CWI) Amsterdam, the Netherlands; University of
Muenster, Germany; and the JRD Tata Memorial Library, Indian Institute
of Science, Bangalore, India.

"Mostly the advantage of using eBooks would be their convenience," said
a user at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. "Instead of going
through the hassle of tracking down a specific work and checking it out,
eBooks provide me with easy access to the information I need way at my
own convenience and leisure."

Added Olaf Ernst, President eProduct Management & Innovation, Springer,
"The survey results show that eBooks are best suited for research
purposes or in a search environment. eBooks have the potential to
stimulate new forms of book content usage. The feedback provided in this
survey can help us accommodate their needs as their eBook collections grow."

In 2007 Springer Science+Business Media commissioned a survey which
revealed that the Springer eBook program was widely accepted among
librarians.

The full-text PDF of the white paper, "eBooks - The End User
Perspective" can be found at: www.springer.com/ebooks.

***With apologies for cross-posting***

The Journals Division of the University of Chicago Press and The
Renaissance Society of America are pleased to announce their new
partnership to publish Renaissance Quarterly, the leading American
journal for the interdisciplinary review of Renaissance Studies. The
first issue under the new partnership will be volume 62 (March 2009).

Since its founding fifty-five years ago, RQ has been published by the
Society. With its move to the Press, the journal's online edition will
feature active reference linking, online-only enhancements such as color
images, audio and video files, appendices, and other ancillary material,
and much of the journal's back content. Institutional access to
Renaissance Quarterly's current content will be available only through
direct subscriptions with the University of Chicago Press.

RQ publishes twelve to sixteen articles a year and about four hundred
reviews that use the lenses of multiple disciplines-from Art History to
the History of Science to Women's and Gender Studies-to view the
Renaissance. While firmly committed to publishing the best research on
the Italian and Northern Renaissance, spanning the period of 1300-1650
in Western history, Renaissance Quarterly welcomes scholars who explore
new methodologies.

Circulation, submission, and other information about Renaissance
Quarterly may be found at its new Web site:

BioOne and PCG expand marketing and sales partnership globally; PCG
appoints Jeff Downing as Global Marketing and Sales Director for BioOne

BioOne, the non-profit collaborative of high-impact bioscience
publications, and Publishers Communication Group (PCG), provider of
research, sales and marketing services to scholarly and professional
publishers, today announced the global expansion of their existing sales
and marketing partnership. From January 1, 2009, PCG, which has been
providing BioOne with North American sales and marketing services since
September, will provide exclusive worldwide marketing, sales
representation and library customer service for BioOne and its
prestigious publishing partners.

Susan Skomal, BioOne's executive director and chief operating officer,
explains BioOne's decision to expand its relationship with PCG: "In this
globalized era, we need our marketing, sales and customer service
strategies to be consistently implemented such that local as well as
regional preferences are acknowledged. We are pleased to have found a
single partner that can provide this strategic service -
globally-coordinated but nonetheless localized to reflect varying
customer needs. PCG truly understands BioOne's mission."

"This extended agreement with BioOne will see PCG build on its existing
presence in a range of international markets including Latin America,
China and Japan," adds Douglas Wright, PCG's executive vice president.
"I'm very pleased to have Jeff Downing lead this growing global team;
his knowledge of BioOne's products and expertise in unifying diverse
business needs combine to ensure that we will scale our proven services
effectively to deliver global success for BioOne."

Jeff Downing, newly-appointed Global Marketing and Sales Director for
BioOne, joins the PCG team from sister division Ingenta where he served
as Library Services Director. He comments: "I'm looking forward to
furthering BioOne's collaboration with libraries throughout the world.
We're proud to be creating a global and coordinated support
infrastructure for the valuable research in which BioOne's publishing
partners invest." Jeff is now recruiting dedicated sales representatives
in Europe and Latin America, and will deploy PCG's extensive network of
representative agents to serve other key growth markets.

BioOne and PCG are working together to ensure a smooth transition and
wish to assure current subscribers that they will continue to receive
uninterrupted access to the BioOne databases. We encourage any existing
or potential subscribers with questions or concerns to contact either
PCG or BioOne for more information.
