Re: JSTOR Thomas, Susan Elaine 21 Jan 2009 16:43 UTC

We also have discarded many of our print volumes that are duplicated in JSTOR because of lack of space in the periodical collection, which continues to grow.

I had seen or heard some discussion about the scanned quality and went through a review of titles in a second round of titles to discard and looked at each title before making a decision to discard. In some cases, the older print volumes contain special fonts, scientific formulas, photos, and/or graphics. I took a sample of volumes with the special text and graphics and compared it to the actual online image. In some cases it was disheartning to see the scanned image quality vs. actually having the print copy in hand. For this reason, we did elect to keep the print titles that contained special text or graphics where the scanned image was not satisfactory. I do have a list of what we kept if anyone is interested.

I believe that JSTOR has also noted some concerns with scanned image quality and is working to improve the images so at some point in the future we may be able to go back and remove those retained volumes.

HI Sandra,

You will probably get a ton of replies, so here's mine. We are an
undergraduate liberal arts college.

Do you retain your print titles that are available in JSTOR?

a. Why? Yes, by faculty request, core titles such as Science, or
titles with lots of graphics, such as art journals.

 b. Why not? We did an overall retention review with faculty input.
Titles that did not meet the criteria above were discarded. We needed
the shelf space, and we have access to a regional storage facility.

We have added our first JSTOR collection and I have a couple of
questions. I've noticed on my exchange listserv that JSTOR titles are
offered.

I would like to know if your library participates in JSTOR:

1. Do you retain your print titles that are availalbe in JSTOR?
     a. Why?
     b. Why not?

Thanks,
