Re: T&F online Diane Westerfield 19 Oct 2016 16:20 UTC

I criticized T&F's new website on ERIL but met with a mixed reaction. Generic bootstrap aesthetics and dumbed-down interface aside:

We had to change our link resolver setup to accommodate T&F, which in turn exposed some other problems. T&F doesn't allow their articles to appear in a frame, so now we have a klugey workaround in 360Link. Patrons have to click an extra link to get to a T&F article. That is, if they even read the message in the empty frame where articles normally appear. Our T&F usage must be declining as people get stuck at that screen and go elsewhere. The other problem we have is our klugey index/abstract databases in 360Link that now misbehave much more obviously in the new setup - the dreaded circular links that never get to full text.

We tweaked our WAM Proxy settings so the website from proxied links look better, but we still can't get most of the icons to load. Instead, we get the little garbagey boxes that say F0E0 or similar. Our computer guy says it's because the style sheets (and possibly other things like scripts?) are loading from many different sources.

Needless to say I am deeply unhappy with T&F, but I guess there's not much we can do besides complain.

All,
Classes have started and the situation remains the same.
We have been frustrated, as well.
We've done the contacting our rep, Beth Mullen.
We've give them screenshots of the issues and detailed explanations.
After several back-and-forth emails with them, I received the attached reply, where they apologize for the inconvenience and say it may take months to repair.
They say they do not "officially" support EZproxy and WAM proxy. And that users should go directly to their site, which means to use their site without proxies, I guess.
(certainly not the reply I expected.)
This is their solution:
" all we can recommend in the short term is that content is accessed on our site directly."

We’re having a lot of navigation problems, and have had a few reports from our faculty and liaisons.

Our rep advised putting an email with detailed problems into their support email, which we’ve done.

There is a lot of scrolling to do, and volumes/issues links are set up in a way that make navigating nearly impossible, in my opinion. I’m surprised that they didn’t transition the platforms so they could catch bugs, and instead just went live with the new one.

Hope we see a change soon since classes are started!

Sorry, I just noticed that on the table of contents page, if you hover over the green check mark it says “Partial Access” which is confusing when it means Full Access at the article level. However, the Partial Access check mark is within a green triangle whereas the Full Access check mark is within a green circle so maybe the shape is supposed to be a clue. But still confusing.

If you actually select an article title to look at, the green check icon is near the top left of the screen and it says “Full access”

I think that is the only place I have seen verbage for what the check mark means although the check mark appears on other pages such as the table of contents page to the right of the article citations.

What does the little green checkmark mean on the brief citation? I thought it was whether we had access, but apparently not.

I didn't have a problem with it. It seems fairly user friendly to me. When I clicked the link on our website for the individual journal, it took me right in. Then when I did a browse, I just check the box for items that we have access to and it filtered correctly.

I have a support ticket open because although it says at the top that access is provided by our institution, it is asking for login info and we should be IP authenticated.
