Serials Cataloger, George A. Smathers Library, University of Florida

Responsibilities:  Responsible for general serials cataloging in all
subjects and formats, with particular emphasis on electronic journals and
CD ROM products.  Provides full level original subject and descriptive
cataloging using AACR2 and LC classification and subject headings
according to University of Florida cataloging policies and CONSER
guidelines.  Creates and maintains serials holdings records according to
UF implementation of MARC Format for Holdings & Locations (MFHL) in LUIS,
the NOTIS-based online system supported by the Florida Center for Library
Automation (FCLA), upgrades and authenticates existing catalog records to
CONSER standards, and establishes authoritative forms of names using NACO
standards. Assists in establishing policies and procedures and analysis of
workflows, in particular those which coordinate UF serials processing with
national standards and locally decentralized serials maintenance and
processing. Solves complex serials cataloging problems, handles binding
and holdings maintenance questions, and assists with training serials
cataloging staff.

Required:  Masters degree from an ALA-accredited institution; excellent
analytical skills and proven effectiveness in planning, setting
priorities, and problem-solving; ability to work effectively in a complex
academic research library environment; excellent communication skills in
English, both written and oral; reading knowledge of one or more foreign
languages, German preferred; ability to interact effectively with a wide
range of faculty, library staff and students; one year minimum of serials
experience; knowledge of AACR2, LC classification and subject headings,
MARC formats, and use of an online cataloging system.

Preferred: Proficiency in the use of computers for a broad range of
applications; minimum one year of cataloging experience.

Salary: Negotiable depending on qualifications, minimum $24,000 for 12
months.

Benefits:  Faculty status.  Twenty-two days vacation, thirteen
days sick leave annually.  TIAA/CREF or other retirement options, usual
insurance benefits, no state or local income tax.
