Re: Union listing duties Eleanor Cook 05 Oct 1993 16:20 UTC

I would like to thank everyone who responded to my question concerning
the staffing level for union list work. As I suspected, it varies
greatly depending on size of the library, commitment to union
listing, and whether or not the periodicals in the library are
cataloged.

I had people telling me that straightforward updates were handled by
student assistants or library clerical staff, while other people
described situations where it was a routine part of a much larger set
of duties that a high level staff or professional cataloger would
perform. Sometimes the updating was performed in a serials department,
though most often it was in cataloging.

Where I work, periodicals are not classified or cataloged, which is
why this activity is being done in Serials.

I will probably have more questions in the future, and it
is comforting to know that there are so many people with experience
out there to help us along!

Thanks again,
