ALA Program on MARC Format for Holdings Data (MFHD) Mary Ann Van Cura - Thomas Cooley Law School 22 Jun 1995 02:34 UTC

Program Title: MARC FORMAT FOR HOLDINGS DATA: An Implementation Status
Report by Local System Vendors and Utilities

Date: Saturday, June 24, 1995
Time: 9:30-11:30
Place: MCC-N228

Program Focus: The status of implementation of MFHD by local system
vendors and by utilities; and the status of development of a shared
holdings database.

Program Description: The MARC Format for Holdings Data, approved in
1984, is intended to facilitate communication of holdings data (location,
call number, copy number, summary range of holdings, piece-level
holdings, acquisition status, and so forth). After a decade, how
far have we advanced in its implementation? What are the
implications for libraries? Speakers will clarify how their systems
communicate holdings data now, address current and anticipated uses of the
format in their systems, and clarify what data conversion issues they see
facing libraries. Utilities will also describe their role in storing,
maintaining, and sharing MARC Holdings Data. Will their role with MARC
holdings be as extensive as their role with MARC bibliographic and
authorities data?
