Bill-
Having just last summer shifted and relabelled our
periodicals collection (thousands of volumes), I have a deep feeling of
sympathy for you! We had for years not shelved legitimate title changes
where they belonged; consequently, the user had a maze of cross
references and places to find. With our serials scheduled to go on-line
next month, I thought it behooved us to just "bite the bullet" and do
what should have been done right from the start: relabel and move the
durn things! It has been worth the effort in ease of access for
everyone--from staff to patrons! (If you're interested in the particulars
of the move, e-mail me.)

For Bill Benson, re Journal of the (Royal) Chemical Society:

That's why we've both cataloged and classified our journals: shelving by
call number certainly has kept me from having ANY grey hairs, even after
25+ years in serials cataloging (having just had a birthday this week, I'm
really conscious of things that show signs of the ravages of time and
serials...)
