Subject: Periodical Security Methods

We are planning to switch to an electromagnetic security system such as
the 3M or Knogo system and would like to know what have been the
experiences of other libraries regarding placing the security strips in
all or almost all current pe riodicals. (Our loose periodicals are NOT in
open stacks.) We check in about 1 750 issues per month. How much time
would it take to place strips in all of them? Has anyone noticed a
decline in theft from tagging everything? Does any one have experience
with a random tagging operation? I imagine that tagging loose periodicals
that are maintained in open stacks is worth the effort, what about tagging
issues in closed stacks?

Any ideas about the value of an effort to tag loose periodicals or
reasonably effective means to deter theft with less work and expense would
be appreciated.

Thanks to all who can reply.
