The library I used to work in called them "magic mending" for some reason.
It is time & labor intensive.  You have to have glue, and that's messy.
They don't stand up well on the shelf, at least for slick papered
periodicals that tend to flop.  I would avoid it.  I think the labor
invested plus glue, covers, brushes, etc. might be better-spent on buying
boxes or sending them to the bindery.  Just my opinion.
