NASIG/SOLINET Announcement

     USMARC HOLDINGS FORMAT
A new workshop cosponsored by NASIG and SOLINET

     Friday, August 7, 1998
     9am-4pm
     Fairfield Inn Midtown, Atlanta, GA

Is the USMARC Holdings Format part of your library
system? Perhaps you're working with one of the many new
implementations of the Format in an integrated library
system and you're wondering what information the codes are
intended to convey. Or you're contemplating systems on the
market and wondering whether Holdings Format is worth
adding to the contract?

This one-day workshop will cover the MARC Format for
Holdings Data and its: origin, development, structure,
content, local and international scope, advantages and
problem areas, relationship to NISO holdings display
standards, future as collections evolve and diversify. The
workshop will explore the following questions: what benefits
do libraries expect from the automation of their holdings?
what can libraries do with data they already have that may be
unstructured, or in some other format? how can libraries
accomodate those pesky problems like multiple versions and
title changes? what is the potential for sharing holdings data?

     Instructors:
Frieda Rosenberg, Head of Serials Cataloging at the
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Mary Ann Van Cura, Associate Director for Technical
Services at the Thomas M. Cooley Law School Library.

     Cost:
$85 for SOLINET & NASIG Members
     $125 for non-members
     $55 for library school students

Registration deadline is July 24. After that date, a $25
surcharge will apply.
