Portland State University Library is seeking a Serials Catalog
Librarian/Assistant Professor.  Under the general supervision of the
Head Cataloger, performs original serials cataloging
and difficult copy cataloging for
new titles and title changes, in a variety of formats, including
print,  microform, and electronic resources. Catalogs materials in
English, Western European languages, and some non-Roman-alphabet
languages.  Performs name and series authority work. Uses the SIRSI
integrated library system and the OCLC bibliographic database. Adds
call numbers and subject headings to serial cataloging copy. Prepares
local holdings and check-in information for input into SIRSI.
Responsible for data input into the Oregon Regional Union List of
Serials via OCLC. Retrospectively converts older serials records and
coordinates the serials retrospective conversion project. Establishes
and updates information in response to inquiries from the public or
other Library departments. Supervises and trains the Serials
Cataloging Assistant.  Answers questions from the Serials Cataloging
Assistant and monograph cataloging staff. Assists in training Serials
Department support staff. Participates in Library and University
committees as well as library instruction. Responsible for special
projects and other related duties as assigned (could include work with
maps, government documents, SIRSI database authority control, etc.).
Maintains personal professional development through active
participation in professional associations or other professional
activities external to the Library.

Qualifications:  American Library Association accredited Master of
Library Science degree. Required:  Previous on-the-job cataloging
experience.  Reading knowledge of at least one foreign language.
Demonstrated interest in principles and processes of bibliographic
control (including knowledge of AACR2R, Library of Congress Rule
Interpretations, LCSH and LC Subject Headings, the CONSER Cataloging
Manual, MARC21 documentation, OCLC Union Listing Manual, OCLC and
SIRSI documentation, and local cataloging procedures). Excellent
interpersonal skills, including excellent oral and written
communication skills in English. The ability to work well
independently and collaboratively with others, including all levels of
staff. Strong problem solving skills. Basic computer skills (word
processing, FTP routines, Internet searching, etc.). The ability to
supervise. The potential to excel in a dynamic and challenging
academic library environment. Preferred:  On-the-job serials
cataloging experience; experience creating series authority and
bibliographic records; experience cataloging electronic resources;
academic library experience.

Salary and Benefits:  This is a full-time, 12-month tenure-track
position with a minimum annual 1.0 FTE salary of $37,788 effective
August 1, 1999.  Full time benefits include 180 hours paid vacation
and 96 hours paid sick leave per year, a choice of retirement and
group health plans, and staff tuition rates, etc.
