------------------
There has been a question posted recently about Passport for Windows not
functioning properly with Windows 98. The institution which had the problem
has been contacted and the problem has been resolved, however it may be of
interest to Passport users to be aware of the cause of the problem in case
your library faces the same situation.
Here is the background to the reported incident. We found that the problem
was not with the Passport software, nor with Win98, but with Microsoft's
FrontPage 97 and FrontPage 98. Passport needs Win98's winsock.dll version
2.0 to work properly. FrontPage 97 or 98, when installed on a Win98 machine,
overwrites version 2.0 with winsock.dll version 1.1. Passport for Windows
will not work properly with winsock.dll version 1.1. This problem can be
corrected by copying the winsock.dll file back into the windows\system
directory from the windows\system\backup directory (where FrontPage moves
the 2.0 version of winsock.dll to), downloading and installing a copy of
winsock.dll 2.0 from the Microsoft web page, or reinstalling Passport either
from the CD or from the download page (each of which will reinstall version
2.0 of winsock.dll). This problem will also affect some Win95 machines if
they have downloaded the winsock.dll 2.0 upgrade.

Please keep the above in mind when running PFW on a machine running
Microsoft FrontPage97 or 98. OCLC has tested PFW in a Win98 environment, and
we found no apparent problems. If anyone has any questions or comments,
replies can be sent directly to me.
Thank you very much.
