"Blazing the Trail: Electronic Serials from Acquisition to Access" will
be held April 16-17, 1999 at the Portland (OR) Hilton. Sponsored by the
Serials Section of the Association for Library Collections and Technical
Services (ALCTS), a division of the American Library Association, the
institute begins at midday on Friday, April 16 and continues all day on
Saturday, April 17. The registration deadline is April 2, 1999.

Librarians from all types and sizes of libraries need practical skills to
handle electronic serials as well as a conceptual understanding of the
theoretical implications of this rapidly changing format. Following the
success of two previous institutes in Washington, DC and St. Louis, MO,
"Blazing the Trail: Electronic Serials from Acquisition to Access" will
offer librarians an opportunity to examine the practical as well as the
theoretical aspects of this exciting medium.

The Keynote Address "Electronic Serials into the Millennium: Destruction,
Change and Opportunities" will be delivered by Evan Reader, Director,
Software & Electronic Information Resources, Office of the Chancellor,
California State University. Thomas Leonhardt, Director of the Library,
Oregon Institute of Technology will close the institute on Saturday
afternoon with a presentation entitled "Wrap it to go." In between,
Sharon Cline McKay, Director, Academic Sales, Western Region, Faxon and
George Machovec, Library Technology and Systems, Colorado Alliance of
Research Libraries will reprise (and update) the lively and stimulating
presentation on management and technical considerations they made at
last spring.

A series of three breakout sessions will enable attendees to consider the
practical aspects of electronic serials and enter into discussion in
group sessions. Each breakout session will be held three times, making
possible for registrants to attend all three sessions. Faye Chadwell,
University of Oregon, will lead a session on negotiating licenses for
electronic serials entitled "A License to Kill*For;" Steve Shadle,
University of Washington will consider the cataloging of electronic
serials with a presentation called "A Square Peg in a Round Hole:
Practical Cataloging for Electronic Serials." Raye Lynn Thomas, Sonoma
State University, will share her thoughts on the technical and training
aspects of electronic serials.

Registration fees are $195 for ALCTS members, $245 for ALA members and
$295 for non-members. To register, or for more details about the
institute, please contact Yvonne A. McLean at ymclean@ala.org or call her
at 800-545-2433, ext. 5032. Full details are available online at:
