                          SERVICES MADISON (AREA 8)

State Historical Society of Wisconsin; Technical Services Section of the Library
Division. Start between $38,085 and $48,701 annually; plus excellent benefits. A
one-year probationary period is required.

JOB DUTIES: This position reports to the associate director for technical
services and is responsible for development, operation, programming, and
maintenance of the Historical Society's Library Catalog Section. The incumbent
acts as chief cataloger for the library coordinating cataloging of materials in
the library's collection of over 3.6 million books, serials, pamphlets,
government publications, electronic format and microformat items. The incumbent
sets goals and allocates resources for the library's cataloging programs,
including its retrospective conversion efforts. The incumbent supervises 7
permanent employees (1 library consultant, 4 librarian seniors, 2 library
services assistants advanced/lead), 5 project employees (3 librarian objectives,
2 library services assistants senior). The incumbent represents the Library on
agency-wide and University of Wisconsin-Madison campus committees and, as an
integral part of the Library management team participates directly in library
strategic planning, policy formulation, and program evaluation. and in its
collection visited by

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Advanced knowledge of the theory, practice, and
literature of librarianship in general and library cataloging in particular;
advanced knowledge of library automation and its applications library cataloging
and technical services; basic knowledge of French; the ability to communicate
effectively with people from a wide variety of ethnic, education and class
backgrounds via telephone, correspondence, email, and face-to-face; basic
supervisor skills in recruiting, training, directing and evaluating professional
staff; basic computer skills in work processing, database searching, and
hardware installation. NOTE: The required knowledge, skills and abilities are
typically acquired through an advanced degree in Library & Information Studies.

JOB DUTIES: This position reports to the associate director for public services;
it is responsible for program planning and day-to-day delivery of all
information services to the public at the nation's largest American history
library (3.6 million items in its collection visited by about 1,000 users per
day). The incumbent sets goals and allocates resources for the library's
circulation, collection maintenance, interlibrary loan, bibliographic
instruction, exhibits, and reference programs (including genealogy and
government publications). She or he supervises 7 professional librarians and 5
FTE's of part-time support staff as well as delivering services in person as
needed. The incumbent represents the library on agency-wide and UW-Madison
campus committees and, as an integral part of the library management team
(division administrator, two bureau chiefs, four section heads), participates
directly in library strategic planning, policy formulation, and program
evaluation.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Basic knowledge of the literature and research
methods in American history, including genealogy; advanced knowledge of the
principles and methods of librarianship, especially reference work and
collection development (including government publications); basic knowledge of
library computer applications, including database and Internet reference sources
and systems used in circulation and interlibrary loan work; the ability to
communicate effectively with people from a wide variety of ethnic, education and
class backgrounds via correspondence, email, and face-to-face; basic supervisory
skills in recruiting, training, directing and evaluating professional staff;
