THE DEPARTMENT:
Science/Engineering Library (SEL) is the second largest library on campus
and provides information resources and services to support research in
biology, chemistry, geology, mathematics, physics, statistics, general
science, computer science & engineering, electrical engineering,
mechanical engineering, and general engineering.

The reference department is a major service unit with responsibility for
traditional and electronic reference service and for formal and informal
instruction in library and electronic information retrieval.  Librarians
assist faculty, students, staff and others in defining research needs,
identifying sources, and developing search strategies.  They teach the use
of the online catalog, CD-ROM data-bases, Internet information resources,
and specialized print resources.

The Periodicals Department spends 80% of the SEL's collection budget on
current subscriptions.  This department coordinates orders and
cancellations with the Center for Information Processing (CIP), evaluates,
organizes, houses, provides access to, binds, and maintains approximately
1000 titles in sciences and engineering.

THE POSITION:
The position provides reference services using both electronic and print
resources.  Services provided include assisting library users to structure
research strategies, access bibliographic sources to determine what exists
on a given topic, and obtain fulltext materials identified in the
research.  User education is provided on a one-to-one basis most of the
time and in group sessions as needed to assist the User Education
Librarian.  This position provides mediated online searches using both
internal and external databases (some for a fee.)  Reference and access
services are provided for periodicals in much the same way as for
reference shown above. This position reports directly to the Director of
the Science/Engineering Library and participates in planning and policy
decisions by participation in reference meetings and various CUL task
forces and work groups.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:
Master of Library/Information Science degree from a graduate school
accredited by the American Library Association is required. Completion of a
course in scientific & technical reference sources is preferred. Also, an
undergraduate or graduate degree in science or engineering is preferred.

Required Experience:
* knowledge of and work with both traditional and electronic resources *
use of database management and word processing software.

Preferred Experience:
* minimum of 2 years experience in a sci/tech research library with
emphasis on reference work
* mediating of online searching in sci/tech subjects
* working with sci/tech periodicals and their indexing sources
* user education experience one-on-one and with groups
* supervisory experience

Other:
* Ability to teach information resources and research techniques to groups
and individuals is required.
* Excellent oral & written communications, organizational, and time
management skills are required.
* Strong service orientation and commitment to furthering the goals and
objectives of academic librarianship are also required.
* Flexibility in adapting to change is required.
