CATALOG LIBRARIAN SERIALS SPECIALIST
RESPONSIBILITIES: Reporting to the Coordinator for Bibliographic Control
and Electronic Services, this position has responsibility for the
organization of information through bibliographic control; liaison with
other departments; and outreach in state, national, and international
bibliographic networks and provides bibliographic control through
cataloging, classification and authority work using standard cataloging
rules, Library of Congress Classification and Subject Headings;
specializes in original cataloging of serials in all formats including
electronic serials; and performs copy cataloging when appropriate. This
position also provides technical assistance to Copy Cataloging and
Retrospective Projects; serves as liaison to the serials unit; examines
and designs work flows related to bibliographic control and organization
for serials; investigates and evaluates new developments in organization
of electronic resources; participates in the planning, development and
evaluation of services; aids the coordinator in service operations as
assigned or requested; prepares various reports and communications;
demonstrates interpersonal skills, including ability to work as a group
leader or team member and the ability to communicate effectively with
faculty, staff, and students.
The Bibliographic Control and Electronic Services department is
comprised of faculty and support staff in the University Libraries�
Morgan Library. This department is organized into three units:
Copy Cataloging, Database Maintenance, and Retrospective
Projects and is responsible for the bibliographic control of materials
in a variety of formats and for applying organizational techniques to
new forms of information to enhance access for users. The
department also builds and maintains the online catalog and
authorities files to support retrieval by users, employing utilities,
and vendors in the provision of programs.
QUALIFICATIONS: Required: Graduate degree in library science
from an ALA accredited degree program; at least two years
cataloging experience in an academic or research library;
knowledge of and experience with the standard cataloging rules,
Library of Congress Classification and Subject Headings, and
MARC formats; excellent written communication and interpersonal
skills; and ability to meet tenure and promotion requirements.
Desired: Experience in serials cataloging; knowledge of and
experience in organization of electronic resources, including
metadata; knowledge of one or more foreign languages; experience
with a bibliographic utility and/or integrated system (preferably
OCLC and Innopac).
RANK AND SALARY: Twelve-month tenure track faculty
appointment with contract reviewed annually until tenure is granted.
Salary minimum of $36,000.
