James, thanks for your quick reply.

I think I see where you're going, but please keep in mind:

1.  Terra has only had starflight for just under 30 years, and Jump for
40 - there are senior members of Starleaper One's epic-voyage crew who
are still alive (Lorette Strider went ass-up in the lead-up to IW1).  On
other hand, this doesn't constrain _Vilani_ walkabouts, though.  (The
culture clash between an acclimated emigrant, Curly, and Eneri Random
Poorsod would be amusing, especially if the latter missed the memo about
the Terrans).

2.  I don't want to deal with a crazier-than-shithouse-rat PC.

3.  Although misjumps would seem to be a canonical way to involve
plot-significant time travel (even mentioned as such in GT:ISW with
Golden Age PCs arriving in the ISW), not this time. That particular can
of worms will remain unopened.

4.  Assuming the above constraints hold, how did new PC get out past the
black stump, survive their ship's terminal embuggerance, and end up a
permanent resident?

At the very least, writing this reply has knocked some ideas loose, so
thank you.
