It is entirely possible, notoriously so in fact, for a character in all
editions of this game to meet with an untimely and unavoidable career-
or even life-ending mishap before regular play even starts.

Clearly, then, the only prudent course of action to minimize risk is to
leave the game books and dice in the box, and not play at all.  Just
think of all of those imaginary lives you'll be saving.
