MAC consists of teams which perform acquisitions, authority control, cataloging, database management, serials processing and binding preparation. Context: The University of Minnesota Libraries has approximately 23,000 active periodical subscriptions and standing orders in both print and electronic formats, and has a substantial uncataloged arrearage of serials in special and general collections. Responsibilities: Perform original and copy cataloging, and recataloging of serials representing all levels of difficulty, all subjects and all formats including electronic publications, using NOTIS, OCLC, RLIN, MARC21, metadata, AACR2, LC rule interpretations, and Library of Congress subject headings and classification scheme. Additionally, this position has responsibility for resolving problems and inconsistencies in bibliographic and holdings records and deciding on appropriate bibliographic treatment of materials. May also catalog web resources and monographs. Work will include liaison with serials acquisitions staff. May also be asked to work on special projects, including retrospective conversion. May assist with training and documentation writing. Will also be expected to keep abreast of current developments and changes in serials cataloging and communicate them to serials cataloging staff. May be assigned to evenings and weekends in response to service needs. As a professional and candidate for continuous appointment, the incumbent will be asked to contribute both to the University of Minnesota Libraries and the larger library community with committee work, presentations and publications. QUALIFICATIONS Required: MLS from an ALA-accredited institution (or foreign equivalent). Experience with serials or monographic cataloging; e.g., coursework, copy cataloging, etc. Knowledge of AACR2, Library of Congress rule interpretations, MARC21 tagging, bibliographic utilities (RLIN and/or OCLC) and an online library system. Demonstrated ability to function in a collaborative, service-oriented environment and to adapt to a frequently changing environment. Excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills. Also needed: initiative, good oral and verbal communication skills; organizational skills; flexibility; ability to both give and take instruction; knowledge of one language besides English; and an aptitude for complex, analytical and detailed work. Preferred: Previous original serials cataloging experience; experience with cataloging of electronic resources; experience with training and documentation writing; familiarity with Dublin Core or other metadata schema. SALARY AND BENEFITS This is a full-time, 12-month, continuous appointment track, academic/professional position with probationary appointment at the Assistant Librarian rank. The Libraries offers a competitive salary, commensurate with experience, but not less than $33,000 for this position. Excellent benefits and substantial moving allowance.
