When we bind our National Geographic, we either have the binding company
create a pocket, or we make one ourselves, in the back of the volume to
hold the maps. We property stamp them and tattle tape them just as we do
the book, but we do not individually catalog them. Each map already has
printed on it which issue it came with, so if it is found outside the
volume it is easily filed appropriately again.

At La Crosse Public Library, we do put them in the pamphlet file.

At my previous position, we cataloged them separately and housed them with
the other maps in the Instructional Materials Center. We used to put them
in pockets in the bound volumes and they got stolen; also there was no
access in the catalog when a student asked for a map of whatever,
especially one they could check out (as opposed to an atlas in reference).

In our vertical file, we have two drawers devoted to maps. I always try
to save the loose maps from National Geographic and put them in these
files (and indeed, we obtain some of our best maps this way).

Hi Karen,

We are a small academic library and our solution for the National
Geographic inserts has been to catalog them and place them in a map case.
Our serials checkin is automated so I also place a note within the checkin
box that states where to find the insert.

Hope this helps.
