Re: Electronic Databases Question Creech, Anna 17 Dec 2003 17:41 UTC

Initially, our electronic resources were maintained by one of the
reference librarians, with some assistance from the catalogers. My
position was created three years ago as the Serials/Databases Cataloger.
My library hadn't had a serials cataloger before, and we really don't
need one, since there is very little for me to catalog. My work mainly
consisted of adding 856 links for our ejournals and making sure that all
of our databases had records and functioning links in the catalog.
Eventually, my work began to overlap with the reference librarian's work
with the ejournals, so when she retired last year, it made sense for me
to take over her responsibilities with the databases as well. In
addition, I now spend at least two hours a week at the reference desk in
order to get some hands-on experience with the end user aspect of our
e-resources, as well as knowledge about how our users actually use these
resources.

Officially, I am still a part of our technical services department;
however, my work requires me to collaborate with most public services.
I feel that I am not entirely in one or the other of the departments,
but rather in all aspects of the library. In my humble opinion, a good
electronic resources librarian is someone with knowledge about the
techie aspect of e-resources, as well as an understanding of their use
by the service population.

also must protect its dissemination. We must beware of all censorship in
whatever form it comes, because to censor, to tamper with truth, to
tamper with our memory, is to commit a historical sin. We, as
librarians, have a major duty that we must all share all over the world,
in order not to allow anybody to control, to twist, and most important
of all, to manipulate our human will and through it our free
institutions."
