I can hear the publishers salivating as libraries debate dropping checkin. They have limited claim time periods, everyone that drops checkin will end up either purchasing missing issues or utilizing exchange services more heavily. For this medical library, checkin will remain. With subscriptions costing thousands of dollars (one is over $15,000) it is not fiscally sound to not make sure we receive each and every issue. I can't understand how any library can justify not making sure they receive every item they pay for. Carol Feustel Carol S. At the Uniersity of Illinois in Urbana, serials received by acquisitions are checked in on Millenium (and will be checked in on Voyager when we get that module up and running). As I work in a departmental library (Funk Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences) I check in both the serials we receive directly AND recheck in the serials checked in by acquisitions becuase there is NO other way to easily determine what needs to be claimed. When we get an automatic claiming system and I can see what has been checked in, maybe I will let it go. My feeling is that claiming missing issues and being able to bind journals is too important to let things come in and go on the shelf without some way to track them (of course, i am not the librarian in charge).
