METADATA LIBRARIAN

The University of California, Santa Barbara, one of ten campuses of the
University of California system, is seeking a Metadata Librarian.  The
successful candidate must be innovative, creative, energetic, and self
motivated.  The University is ranked as a category 1-research university by
the Carnegie Commission, and is an elected member of the Association of
American Universities.  The library memberships include ARL, CLIR, SPARC,
and OCLC.  The library is also a participant in the California Digital
Library.  The library collections include over two million volumes,
government documents, microforms, sophisticated electronic resources, and
numerous Special Collections.

Librarians at the University of California, Santa Barbara are professional
academic appointees who accrue vacation at the rate of two days per month
and sick leave at the rate of one day per month.  The University has an
excellent retirement system, which is coordinated with Social Security.  A
selection of group health, dental, vision, and life insurance plans are
offered by the University.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Reporting to the Head of Cataloging and Database Management, the Metadata
Librarian is responsible for organizing access to information resources
using emerging and traditional metadata schemes.  The incumbent provides
leadership and guidance in selection of schema and data for digital
initiatives.  Develops, documents, and revise standards for metadata
creation in the university libraries.  Trains personnel in metadata
creation and maintenance.  Plans, manages, and reviews metadata for digital
projects and provides guidance in selection of schema and data design.
Develops workflows for metadata projects.  Defines data elements,
recommends usage and determines mapping among metadata schema.  Writes and
maintains policies and procedures relating to metadata projects.

Performs original and complex copy cataloging using appropriate cataloging
standards.  Performs MARC cataloging of a variety of materials including
print, electronic and media, some in foreign languages.  As an original
cataloger creates NACO records or local authority records; revises NAF
authorities, and may submit records to SACO.  Participates in resolving
systems issues relating to the online catalog.  Participates in overall
policy making, planning, problem solving and future directions for the
department.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:  ALA accredited MLS.  Experience with one or more non-MARC
metadata formats.  Course work in cataloging and metadata.  Knowledge of
trends in information access pertaining to libraries, archives, and
repositories.  Experience in leading and managing projects.  Excellent
organizational skills, proven problem solving ability and flexibility.
Demonstrated initiative in fostering new ideas and in implementing change.
Knowledge of current and emerging directions for metadata development and
standards. Experience with personal computers and a variety of software
including Web authoring software.  Excellent oral, written, and
interpersonal communication skills.  Ability to work in a collaborative and
collegial environment.

Preferred:  Knowledge of conventional cataloging (MARC, AACR2, LCSH) and
principles of authority control.  Knowledge of one or more European
languages.

Salary commensurate with qualifications, minimum $43,860.  Review of
