California Library Association Pre-Conference Institute on Electronic Resource Management, Friday, November 10th, 2006, 9:00 am to 4:30 pm Sacramento Convention Center, 1400 J Street, Sacramento CA 95814 Registration fee: $75 Presented by CLA Access, Collections, and Technical Services Section (CLA ACTSS) As more resources become available electronically, libraries face an ever increasing challenge of managing, providing access, and collecting e-metrics of electronic resources. In order to streamline this activity, libraries are revisiting and refreshing their organizational structures to properly staff and manage e-resources. Some have adopted a centralized model and others are continuing to follow a distributed model where the work is incorporated throughout the library. This program will cover the four major areas of ERMS: Electronic Resources Management Systems: What ERM systems are available? How to assess what your library needs, getting started with ERMS, evaluating ERMS. Organizational Integration: Who is involved in managing e-resources throughout the library? What are the license issues; what workflow designs have been developed by libraries? E-Metrics: Extracting and analyzing electronic resource data - best practices Future trends: Where ERMS are going Objectives of the Pre-Conference Institute: *Understand the current issues and trends in the management of electronic resources, including licensing, internal workflow models, and assessment. Also examine the historical context that led to ERMs and current standards. *Be able to identify current and prospective ERM systems, understand what they are offering, and be able to compare and evaluate competing products. *Understand real-world implementation of ERM systems and the work required on the part of purchasing libraries. Serials, collection development, acquisitions, electronic resources and acquisitions librarians, or anyone else charged with managing electronic products and subscriptions will be interested in this program.
