Re: Retention of print journals Borchert, Carol Ann 15 Sep 2006 14:59 UTC
We make every effort to maintain an archive of the titles we purchase, whether online or in print. If a publisher is able to assure us of perpetual access (i.e., we pay for a 2006 subscription, and years from now, we still have access to that 2006 volume), we go ahead and move to online only. If the publisher cannot make that assurance, and they are not archiving through FirstSearch Electronic Collections Online, LOCKSS, or providing a CD *that we are allowed to load on LOCKSS for our users*, we keep a print plus online subscription if at all possible. For more information, you can refer to our libraries' policy 12-403, E-Journal Management, at http://www.lib.usf.edu/admin/policy/docs/12-403.pdf under II.f. (Implementation). Hope this helps! I'd like to include thoughts and comments from other librarians regarding your policies and procedures for review of print subscriptions for cancellation and how electronic access affects that decision. My library is also beginning the process of reviewing our print collection in relation to electronic access. We are building policies and procedures for the retention of print copies when electronic access is available and would appreciate your response to these questions. Thank you for your time and input. Karen Pifher Technical Services Librarian Bridgewater College 402 East College Street Bridgewater, VA 22812-1599 540-828-5740 Do you periodically review your print journal collection? If so, how often do you review your print periodical collection? What factors do you consider when reviewing your print periodical subscriptions for cancellation/nonrenewal? What procedures do you follow while reviewing your print periodical collection? If the print periodical is available is entirely replicated electronically do you discard the paper copy? Have you ever lost electronic access to a journal after the print subscription was cancelled? If so, did you resubscribe to the print or locate another source for electronic content? Do you subscribe to an electronic archiving product? If so, please indicate which one(s). Does your collection development policy discuss any of these issues? If so, would you be willing to provide a copy of your collection development policy? ________________________________________________________________________ Check Out the new free AIM(R) Mail -- 2 GB of storage and industry-leading spam and email virus protection.
