I would think there would be an obligation to fulfill existing (pre-paid) subscriptions before any were diverted to newstands.

For what it's worth, I just sent an email to the NYTimes outling the situation.  Who knows if it will do any good or not, but too many of us are getting ridiculous answers that warrant a explanation/investigation.
