Superfluous Dates? John Radencich, Library Cataloging Dept. 21 Nov 1991 13:14 UTC

What do other serial catalogers do when they encounter a monthly which gives
along with the month date a day date (or annual which includes month or
month and day with the year)? Let me give an example, one which prompted me
to send this question. Journal of geophysical research. Planets. It is a
monthly. The date given is Aug. 25, 1991. In cataloging, and in cataloging
similar items in the past, I recorded the full date in the designation.
AACR 2 seems to support this, for 12.3C1 says to give the date "in the terms
used in the item." However, the "25" here seems superfluous, since there
won't be any other Aug. 1991 issues, so that the month and year only ade-
quately identify the issue. Indeed, adding the "25" could be misleading to
some users, since it implies the existence of other Aug. 1991 issues. As I
said, I have been adding the day date, at least during the AACR 2 era, but
for some reason have only questioned it now. (Who knows why it took me 10
years? Because it takes me that long to wake up in the morning? Because
I haven't had a forum like this to raise the question until now?) Any
answers would be helpful.
