Subject: binding
Regarding binding, for expert opinion I would suggest that the questions
be referred to the preservation list (whenry@lindy.stanford.edu),
however, I will give my two cents worth. The 8th edition of the Library
Binding Institute Standard describes sewing thru the fold, oversewing,
and adhesive binding. Many people suggest that thru the fold sewing
always be preferred if you have signatures. This allows the volume to
open flat and does not destroy any portion of the original document.
For issues that are flat backed on non-glossy paper, adhesive binding is
recommended because less inner margin is removed. The glue must meet LBI
standards, and the notching must be done CAREFULLY. Both the depth of
the notch and the number of notches will determine whether notching
helps the pages stay in place, or provides a potential perforation line.
For glossy paper, the binder/library must decide if oversewing or
adhesive binding will be the best method of leaf attachment.
I feel that it is better to adhesive bind and have better openability
and more margin than it is to have an oversewn volume that can not be
copied well. Although we do not do large amounts of photocopying, we
have titles that are heavily used
by the students, and we rarely have pages fall out of adhesive bound
volumes. I would suggest further discussions with the binder before
writing off adhesive binding and notching.
