---------- Forwarded message ---------- Date: Mon, 8 Jun 1998 11:30:11 -0400 From: Andrea Kross <akross@CNU.EDU> Subject: job announcement: Technical Services Librarian CHRISTOPHER NEWPORT UNIVERSITY Technical Services Librarian The Captain John Smith Library at Christopher Newport University, a state university of 5,000 students in Virginia's Tidewater area, is seeking a Technical Services Librarian responsible for the coordination and supervision of the cataloging, acquisitions, and serials functions of the library; coordination of the work-flow of the department and overseeing its daily operation; original and complex copy cataloging of monographs, serials publications, audiovisuals and electronic resources; and maintenance of the on-line catalog. The Technical Services Librarian also participates in the development of library goals, policies and procedures; participates in staffing the reference desk, including occasional weekends and nights; and teaches in the library's instruction program. The position reports to the University Librarian and supervises one librarian, five support staff and several student assistants. Librarians are members of the instructional faculty and are expected to meet university standards for tenure and promotion, including research, publication and service. Salary range is mid 30's. The following qualifications are required: ALA accredited MLS; progressively responsible experience in cataloging; supervisory experience as a department head; knowledge of cataloging procedures and resources, including AACR2, LCSH, OCLC, LC classification and MARC formats; experience in authority control; experience with integrated library systems; excellent interpersonal and communication skills; planning, organizational and analytical abilities. The following qualifications are preferred: Experience with cataloging in multiple formats; experience using new technologies; a reading knowledge of a second language; experience in library acquisitions and serials; experience in academic libraries; experience in reference and library instruction; experience with VTLS system; and second master's degree.
