Stephanie,
Eckerd College's binding procedures are done twice a year - once in the
summer when most of our students have left and during January when not
many students are in school due to off campus programs.
We have two sections for our periodical collection - Display (for the
current year of the popular magazines) and Stacks (for journals and
other periodicals). Our students and other patrons have complete access
to both sections, as well as to the microfilm collection.
Because of the fact that we send out shipments twice a year, the
turnaround time period is about two to three months for each of the
binderies. We currently subscribe to about 1100 titles ( in the
physical sense), along with e-journals from ProjectMuse and JStore.
When I send the journals to be bound, the total count maybe anywhere
from 350 to 500 issues. This could mean that there will be one title
with four volumes to be bound at a time. Thus, you can see why their
would be a time lag for our school in getting the periodicals back in a
prompt manner from the different binders.
Our shelving space is very limited at this time and therefore have to
decide on how many years of back issues of a title, especially if we
have a subscription to that title on microfilm. Usually, I will try to
make space for at least two years of hard copy in the stacks. Our space
in the microfilm cabinets is also becoming less and less. Therefore, I
splice films together when I am able.
One of our periodicals is kept in a special collections area and our
patrons have to ask for the particular issues at the Circulation Desk.
However, that happens infrequently. We have a mezzanine area that is
used for runs of journals that we no longer receive and that the
professors do not want to see removed from the Library but do understand
our need for space and we have placed them up in this area. If you have
any more questions, please do not hesitate to write me directly at my
e-mail address:
peadensc@eckerd.edu
Sincerely yours,
Sarah Peaden
